Healthy Ageing

Healthy Ageing!

What does this term mean to you?

As some of you will know I am a career for both of my parents. That means I am around the elderly population quite a bit. What I have seen is there is a clear difference between those that have aged with good health and those that have not.

Seeing the difference between these, has made me consider the importance of healthy ageing. Being healthy and well when you are older is possible. It also allows you to control later life and this needs to be a priority or at least a main health goal if you would like to age with good health.

Ageing with illness and lifestyle conditions makes a big difference to your independence as you get older. And while you are still young or younger, and able to do everything yourself, it is not something you may spend considerable time contemplating.

But I can tell you once you hit middle age and get into your 50’s you do start to feel the effects of aging. This was especially noticeable to me coming off my renovations. I would say even as close as 5 years ago I would have no real side effects from the physical work as I have always done some kind of physical exercise. But when the renovations started my exercise plan went out the window. Although I told myself all the physical work, I was doing was equivalent to some form of exercise. How wrong I was!

I was surprised by the fast deterioration of strength in my lower body, even though I was up and down the ladder hundreds of times with painting. Once the renovations stopped and I slowed down, and then had to deal with post adrenal stress and my body kind of fell apart.

The recovery has been much harder, and the body is responding much slower. This is because of age and post adrenal recovery. There was a great deal of stress around the renovations, and this added extra inflammation to my health picture.

So, by experiencing these issues it has made me consider the issues around healthy ageing.

I am hearing a lot of people talk about this subject and I would love to hear how you feel about it!

What does it mean to you and why is it so hard to achieve?

Lack of motivation seems to be the most common issue I hear people talk about. They know they should do something but lack the motivation or the knowledge on how to get started.

What can you do?

Firstly, don’t be too harsh with yourself as that just makes it harder to get going. Acknowledge the good stuff and focus on making one positive step per day. If you can do this daily, then it will become easier.

Set some goals. This helps to give you focus and measure your improvements. It is also good to break these goals down into steps and this helps to look at the task with less overwhelm.

Prioritise your health. It is up to you and only you on how you want your health journey to look like.

Look at your stresses and find ways to manage them well. Stress is one of the biggest inflammatory conditions that is involved with many health conditions. And it also speeds up the aging process.

Movement even if it is just a light walk. Now the warmer weather is here and daylight savings, it is easier to go for that walk after dinner rather than sitting in front of the TV.

As part of a healthy ageing picture we need to include food and nutrition along with genetics. I offer a Health and Wellness report that looks at your DNA and epigenetics. This report can help you with:

  • Weight loss

  • Relief from joint pain

  • Better sleeping patterns

  • Regulation of hormone imbalances

  • Healthier ageing

  • Menopause balance

  • Heart health and Cardiovascular Health

  • Increased energy and vitality

  • Blood pressure

  • Mental Health – Dementia, Depression and Anxiety.

  • The Healthy Ageing Journey

I am with you on this journey as I also need to make some considerable life changes. I am carrying extra weight that I need to remove, and I need to improve my energy and vitality.

I really want to age with good health and remain strong and independent. I am aware of the importance of good muscle strength, this enables you to be mobile and get yourself up and down. Because when you can not longer physically get yourself up from the ground, then independence can disappear. Good muscle mass also is imperative to reduce chronic health diseases.

My goal is to work through all the ideas of healthy ageing and discuss these with you. It will include areas such as:

  • The impact of stress on the body – fatigue and mental health.

  • The gut/brain connection.

  • The importance of good gut health as we age.

  • The importance of a good night’s sleep

  • Why does everything ache when I get off the couch at night?

  • What should I be eating?

  • What type of diet works for me?

  • What type of exercise should I be doing?

  • Weight bearing exercise past 50

  • Caring for others and not yourself.

  • Why is this so hard to achieve?

  • Inflammation – the ageing curse

  • How can you help yourself.

If you feel there is another subject you would like to talk about then all feedback is very welcome. I am really curious to hear all your thoughts around this subject.
